ON BIKE TO DISCOVER LIO PICCOLO AND THE PINK FLAMINGOS
Lio Piccolo is a small village not far from Cavallino Treporti. It consists of a group of islets in the Venetian Lagoon. The road to get there is very narrow, and the area is very quiet: it's ideal to go by bike, although it can also be reached by car. For some years now, thousands of pink flamingos have decided to make the lagoon around Lio Piccolo their home, especially in spring. It's not easy to see them, but it's not impossible either!
Flamingos are pink because of their particular diet, which consists mainly of aquatic organisms such as shrimps and algae, which have a high content of pigments called carotenoids. This is the same pigment that causes the transformation of shrimps from gray to pink.
